I’m struggling a lot more again, and when I do that, I make plans (which is probably a huge reason why I haven’t been handling the current situation very well).

I haven’t been writing (outside of work) very much lately, and I’d like to pick it back up again since National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, is just on the horizon. I have an idea I’m excited about, but my attempt last year barely made it past the halfway point of 50,000 words.

Cue Yarn Social’s Meta KCAL. I had already planned on “auditing” the Dissent KAL there (I bought my yarn from another LYS before the Knit-Along was announced), but there’s now a NaNoSweMo, a challenge knit-along inspired by NaNoWriMo to knit a sweater in a month, group picking up there that sounds like a lot of fun.

So, I felt like I have to make a choice. However, there’s very little chance I could successfully write a full novel or knit a whole fingering-weight sweater in a month anyway. Which made me ask myself why I’m stressing this at all in the first place?

When I feel like I “have” to do something, I often lose interest. So, why not work on whatever sounds better that day, the novel or the sweater? Sure, I may end the month with half a novel and half a sweater, but that’s better than only one or the other, right?

What do you think? Is this “guidelines more than actual rules” approach a good idea, or am I biting off more than I can chew again? Let me know in the comments.

  1. I am sorry to hear you have been struggling. I tend to stop doing things that make me happy when I am not in a good place. It seems counter intuitive, but that is just how i roll-I just withdraw. I think your idea of allowing the mood drive you focus for the day is perfect. Let’s face it, this is an area where you can be a tad fickle. There are no life decisions here. Nothing is in the balance. There is just win-win for you and that (in my honest opinion) is paramount for your health. {{hugs}} Regina
