Long-time readers may recall my coming-to-terms of my own lack of relevancy in regards to the crocheted bucket hat. It’s helped that the trend is still going strong.
I found (on Instagram and TikTok, of all places) a free, popular bucket hat pattern from Hobbii. I thought it was cute and a little more utilitarian than my lace one. It also brought me so much joy because people were choosing fun, bright, multicolored yarn in honor of when that style of hat was popular in the 90s (before I even started crocheting!).
That was all I thought of it, though, until I was watching my parents’ home last weekend while they were away on vacation. Mom had picked up a whole skein of Red Heart Super Saver in a color called “Blacklight” to show one person how to crochet. It was the 90s skate-rink carpet color of my dreams. Mom still had the full skein and didn’t want it. So, she offered it to me, and I knew I had to make this bucket hat.

It’s the loudest article of clothing I have ever owned, and I that’s saying something. I was a child in the 90s, after all. The yarn was still Red Heart Super Saver, so I can’t say it was a fun project, but I love how it turned out. It also meant I was ignoring my long list of deadlines as August approaches, but honestly, not mad about it. It will all work out, one way or another.
Meanwhile, I will dream about wearing this beauty at theme parks, 90s bar outings, and where ever else people need to spot me easily!
