Knitting is Sexy

CW: This post mentions previous negative body image.

There’s a certain image that people have in their head of a “knitter.” I find it’s usually the cartoon granny from Looney Toons, sitting in her rocking chair, holding her knitting needles up almost perpendicular to the ground, and sock after sock falling into her lap.

It’s gotten better over the years, but it’s still annoying. Some of the most popular designs out there right now are amazing crops and tanks. My “crochet” google alert doesn’t go two days without some tabloid story about a celebrity rocking a crocheted swimsuit. But because of this stuck image in their heads, tell any non-knitters about these things and they raise an eyebrow.

Imagine my joy, after years of trying to switch up that image, when I saw these:

Yes!! Knitting is sexy! I actually recognized the shawl in the first photo, Out of Darkness by Boo Knits, because I had already knit one. That’s when I had the thought “I could do a shoot like this, right?” It made it on to the bucket wish list, but for years and years it stayed pretty far at the bottom.

That happened because I’ve been a large range of sizes and levels of fit in my adult life, and no matter where I was on that range, I rarely felt comfortable in my own skin. I know this is something most people also feel at some point or another. There’s a lot of things we could blame for that, but that’s not the point of this post.

The truth is the human body in all its shapes and forms is amazing. It took a lot of work for me to get to that truth (and I’m still working through my own insecurities all the time), but I did get there. When I finally gathered the necessary confidence (and funds), I booked myself a boudoir shoot.

And frankly, it was a blast!! I picked an excellent photographer (Kelsey Houchen, if you’re close to KC and interested) who didn’t bat an eyelash when I told her I wanted a shoot focused on knitwear that I made. Refreshing is an understatement. It was one of the most fun afternoons I’ve had this year!

Of course, I brought my own Out of Darkness, the one that kind of started it all. I brought my Foam, and my in-progress Dissent, but I also modeled some brand new recent finishes. I’ll have those out for some exciting FO Fridays on Instagram, so be sure to follow me there to see the rest!
