Usually, my Tuesday posts are dedicated to whatever fibery adventure I had the previous weekend, but last weekend the only fiber thing I did was knit in line at the Walt Disney World resort. So instead, let’s talk about Local Yarn Store Day which is coming up this Saturday!
Local yarn stores are interesting businesses. You buy supplies there, sure, but you can also learn new skills and enjoy the company of likeminded people. The latter two can come free of charge in many of the places I frequent. One of my favorite parts of working at The Studio was that community, and it was always expected that anyone who came into the shop was warmly welcomed whether they were buying today or not.
To that end, though, shops need to make money to stay open. If the shop closes, that community is gone. In an effort to increase traffic to these shops, The Nation Needlearts Association created LYS Day last year as “an opportunity to support and celebrate brick and mortar yarn stores.”
Many LYSs have exciting events or exclusive products to go along with the day, and many of the shops near Kansas City are among them!
First up, my home store The Studio Knitting and Needlepoint in Overland Park is having a trunk show with none other than my good friend Marci of Th’red Head Designs. Marci is jumping outside her comfort zone with a new, named color. You won’t want to miss it! I’ll be there too, with some samples I’ve made out of her gorgeous yarns.
Yarn Social in Kansas City will also have a trunk show, Old Rusted Chair Yarns out of Nashville, Tennessee. They will have LYS Day exclusive yarns and patterns, as well as door prizes and Boulevard Bakery cookies! And props to Yarn Social, they’re giving all of their profits from any Lola Bean yarn purchased through next Sunday to ACLU of Missouri, so get some beautiful yarn and support a great cause at the same time!
In Leavenworth, Momo’s Knitting Nook has special kits for a LYS Day knit-along. They’re going to have a cast-on party (with treats!) at 1 p.m. in their shop.
Yarn Shop and More in Overland Park will have treats all day and a chance to win a $50 gift certificate.
The newest area shop, Unwind Fiber Arts in Lee’s Summit, is going to have special colors of Koigu for the occasion. The Lee’s Summit Art walk is also that weekend, and they’ll have a special exhibit in the shop.
Finally, The Yarn Barn in Lawrence is having a LYS Day sale: 20% off all their knitting yarns Saturday AND Sunday. They’ll have a new pattern by Casapinka that will be free with a yarn purchase for the project.
So, I hope you’ll make it out to participate in some of these fun happenings. Even if none of these are your local shops, go to your LYS. Buy some pretty yarn, and remember to show off your haul! The official hashtag is #LYSDay, and I’d love to see them too, with #fiberadventures.
