I work in social media marketing, so when I see ads on Facebook or Instagram, I tend not to get sucked in. If anything, seeing them helps me do my job. I am constantly looking at them from a strategic standpoint, so it takes a lot to get me to buy whatever the ad is selling. One ad recently did so.
The Woobles are probably the best advertised craft product right now. They are kits for adorable amigurumi (crocheted stuffed toys) that offers to teach beginners the necessary skills with included tutorial videos. I have been served so many ads from them, and I’m always a little wary of “beginner” craft products. They did manage to finally get me, though:
The first time I saw Gertrude, I said “Guess I’m buying a kit.” I justified it as a good opportunity to test it out, see if it would actually be a good thing to recommend to beginners interested in crochet.
I have to admit, I was pretty in love the moment my kit arrived. They send you links to download their PDF pattern, but their tutorial videos are top notch. Even better, they have videos for right-handed AND left-handed folks alike.
Their yarn is the perfect amigurumi yarn, too. It’s a knit jersey tube over a soft core, perfect for filling in gaps between stitches while still offering enough stitch definition for beginners. Weaving in ends was a little tricky, but if you’re making a toy, most of those ends are tucked in with the stuffing anyway.
My one complaint (and it’s really only because I am not their target audience) is the pattern explains what the abbreviations stand for, but not what it is. It told me the 3 dc cluster was “3 double crochet cluster,” but not how it was done. There’s a couple of different ways to make these bobbles, and I had to watch the (high quality) tutorial video to figure out which one they wanted me to make. It took a few minutes when I could read it in a few seconds. This is also an intermediate kit. It would be a good “step up” skill to see if you could learn a technique from a written pattern, but maybe I’m just old school that way.
After a fun few hours crocheting, I fell completely in love:

What’s more is you can buy little accessory kits you can make for your Wooble, too!

Overall, I really did love my experience with my Wooble kits. You can tell the people running the company truly have a love for the craft. I can, with confidence now, recommend them to beginners, and I may even get another kit for myself in the near future.

I’m obsessed with Woobles! I was a complete beginner and am having so much fun making them. I agree about the videos. So great! Check out her book. I love the patterns but also enjoy using the tutorials in the book as a companion to the videos.
