I love a whimsical, gamed make-along. I was so excited when Crochet Me Zaddy dropped the Temperature Snake MAL in January, for the year of the snake in 2025.
However, I knew there was no way I could make the whole year (it would easily be 20+ feet long!). Instead, I thought I would track the temperature of just one quarter of the year. I picked the quarter of my 33rd birthday: April to June.

The NOAA gave averages for Kansas City from April to June: the lowest being around 40°F and the highest around 90°F. If I counted in sets of ~10°, I needed seven colors.
I wanted to use Bernat Blanket yarn, since it makes for a very cuddly stuffy, but they come in giant balls from the big craft stores. I knew I wouldn’t need all that much for the temperature colors, so I strode to my local JoAnn’s (for the last time, RIP) and looked at their selection of the Bernat Blanket Ombre. The long swathes of color should be just enough, since they made up about a quarter of the big balls. I went with their purple and orange, the darkest of each version being the extreme temps.
I did not end up using the extreme temp colors, though! We had a somewhat chilly (but not freezing) start to April followed by a very mild lead-up to summer. The average temp per day (as recorded by NOAA) stayed between 41°F and 89°F. What I didn’t count on was the most popular temperature (61°F to 70°F, otherwise known as perfection) was the one I had the least amount of yarn for, so I did have to hunt down one more purple ombre.

I’m so happy with it! All in all, it was a fun project. It ended before the temperature tracking became tedious, and my snake lives in my comfy chair, as he is the best neck pillow I have ever owned.
There is (maybe unfortunately…) a bunch of 2025 left, so feel free to slither on in and make your own Little Snake Buddy!
