I got to attend a spinning retreat hosted by my friends Christine (Treasure Goddess) and Teri (Fiberterian) in the before times, and I was really missing it over the years. So when they decided to offer another, I signed up as quick as I could!
This one was all about silk, which was a little intimidating. It wasn’t that I hadn’t spun silk before. On the contrary, I had spun it before and knew it to be a temperamental, tricky fiber. Having finished this fun, fulfilling retreat, I think I could be a silk spinner after all.
First, we got to do a “breed” study (the same worms can give you different silk depending on what they eat), which was honestly my favorite part. I loved learning where they came from and how they were processed, especially while I’m actively spinning said fiber. It turns out the Mulberry silk was my least favorite to spin but my favorite finished yarn… Something to figure out later!

We also got to play with Mawata silk hankies, blends with wool and other luxury fibers, and fiber-prep methods. I got to revisit faux-lags, which was one of my favorite preps from the last retreat.
The best part was just hanging out with like-minded fiber artists. During a break, I got such a kick out of coming across a spinning post on Instagram and sharing it with my table buddy, who was just as excited to see it as I was. That doesn’t happen all the time, and it was truly a joy even when my legs and back became too tired to spin anymore.
This retreat inspired a lot of project ideas, so stay tuned!!
